Plug-ins and ActiveX Components
Several small programs called plug-ins and ActiveX components are available to expand the functionality of your browser. For example, RealAudio allows you to listen to live audio broadcasts over the Internet. ActiveX components are specific to Microsoft's Internet Explorer; plug-ins are often browser independent.

To obtain these add-ons, you typically visit the Web site of the company that wrote the software, complete a brief registration form, select the program for your type of computer, download the file, and then install the file. It's best to only install the programs you think you'll use on a regular basis. In many cases some of the add-ons may already be installed on your computer. You may try clicking on the samples to see if you have the add-on already.

Adobe Acrobat Reader
This standard plug-in allows you to view Acrobat Portable Document Files (PDF). PDF files are better than Web pages because you will see all of the original fonts, formatting, and graphics. Most government forms, such as tax forms, are available in PDF. You will also find many catalogs, technical manuals, and other brochures in PDF format. Sample (You should see a tax form. Click on the browser's Back button when you are done viewing it.)

QuickTime
This is one of the first and best programs for viewing movie files. Microsoft includes ActiveMovie with Internet Explorer. Sample (You should see a block with four squares and a Q in the middle. After a long, black line appears, click on the arrow pointing right to make the inchworm move.)

Real Player

This allows you to see video or hear audio programs over the Internet. There are two versions; one free and the Plus version that offers support and additional features for a fee. You can use this program in conjunction with your browser or all by itself. Because of its use of "streaming" technology, you don't have to wait for the entire file to download before you begin hearing or seeing it. Sample

ShockWave
This plug-in allows your browser to play multimedia interactive animation. For example, you may see a picture of a map that you can zoom in and out on for more or less detail.

Other Sources
You'll find an abundant supply of add-on programs at these locations: ActiveX.com, Plug-in Plaza, and Yahoo.
